The Kingdom of Cambodia in central Southeast Asia maybe a relatively small country, but it has had colourful history since its Khmer empire collapsed in the 15th century. The vast temples of Angkor (near modern day Semi Reap) attract millions of visitors each year, many of them backpackers on the popular SE Asia circuit. There is more to see in Cambodia than just the Angkor temples, its capital of Phenom Pen is worth a visit to see faded colonial architecture from the French period of the 19th century. The sleepy coastal town of Sihanoukville is a world away from the undeveloped rural rice fields and offers travellers some unspoiled laid back beach time before moving on to the hustle and bustle of Thailand’s Bangkok or that Mekong River cruise to get to Vietnams Saigon.
